The Second Opera presents Ann Hallenberg in a visual concert of music by 18th century female composers. …facciamo opera! – roughly translated as Let’s make opera! – refers to the fact that the creation of opera can never be stopped. At a time when women were not allowed to write operas for the big stage, they did it anyway – in the monasteries and for the courts and in the form of oratorios and cantatas. Today we would definitely call their works opera and the concert presents genuine rarities just waiting to be enjoyed at the highest musical level!
Enjoy Italian composers Caterina Grazianini’s Santa Teresa, Margherita Grimani’s La Decollazione di San Giovanni Battista and Rosa Coccia’s Sant-Alesso – three oratorios composed for the imperial court in Vienna. From the German aristocrat Maria Walpurgis we hear music from the opera Il Trionfo della Fedeltá and from Maria Teresa Agnesi the serenades L’Insubria Consolata and Ulisse in Campania, two grand, operatic orchestral cantatas unheard in modern times. Rosa Coccia’s Arsinoe in the modern edition by Holger Schmitt-Hallenberg receives its world premiere here – the music has never been performed before, even when it was written!
In the usual Second Opera manner, the concert also offers in-depth knowledge in the form of a conversation between the Second Opera’s musical director Hanna Fritzson and musicologist Holger Schmitt-Hallenberg.
